Although the landscape is cold, Monet has endowed it with all kinds of warm nuances; the rays of sunlight bathe the brightest areas in yellow.

Monet and the Snow Landscapes

Snowy landscapes were a source of inspiration for Monet throughout his career. He painted in a unique way the lights and shadows over various frozen urban and rural settings. Notable works include: Boulevard des Capucines and Grainstacks in the Snow.

The Painting Today

The painting was acquired several times, being part of three private collections, until in 1984 it was purchased by the French national museums society.

Currently, The Magpie is part of the permanent collection of the Musée d’Orsay, Paris, France.

ARTIST DATA

Full Name: Oscar-Claude Monet.
Birth: 1840, Paris, France.
Death: 1926, Giverny, France.
Style: Impressionism.

A leader of the Impressionist art movement, Monet’s paintings are recognized as the purest examples of this style. His importance is reflected in the price achieved by his oil painting "Le Bassin Aux Nymphéas," sold in London in 2008 for 40.9 million pounds sterling.

Monet laid the foundations of modern painting. His brush did not aim to tell a story or provide a moral lesson to the viewer, but rather placed impressions on the canvas based on sensations experienced by the eye. The pointillist brushstrokes, which he painted with the mastery of a true artist, are the origin of modern pictorial art.
