It is undoubtedly the most complex and most symbolically rich painting by El Greco. This Mannerist oil painting dates from the year 1587 and was commissioned to represent a miracle that at that time existed in the popular memory of Toledo: the descent from heaven of St. Augustine and St. Stephen to bury the body of Lord Orgaz.
The painting is presented as a theological and descriptive allegory of heaven (upper half) and earth (lower half).
It was painted for the parish of Santo Tomé (Toledo), and it is in this same church where it is currently preserved.
