A portrait titled "Little Girl", was created by the painter William-Adolphe Bouguereau in 1878.
It displays the bust of a girl with her hands in a prayer position against a black background. This type of dark background is a technique already used in the Baroque paintings by renowned artists such as Francisco de Zurbarán to highlight notable religious figures, such as Saint John of the Cross. As is usual with the painter, the facial expression, chiaroscuro, colors, and details are magnificently achieved. Notice the light coming from the upper right quarter of the work, producing highlights and shadows on the hair, face, fingers, and folds of the dress.
Canvas work displayed at the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo, Japan.
